PostNL celebrates Green Postal Day together with international postal organizations
The Hague, 19 September 2024 – Today, PostNL and 23 other postal organizations worldwide are participating in the sixth Green Postal Day. Together, they celebrate more than 15 years of global collaboration within the postal sector to reduce their impact on the climate. Over the past year, PostNL, as a service provider in e-commerce and mail, has taken further steps alongside other postal organizations to lower their CO2 emissions. PostNL is committed to more sustainable logistics by reducing the emissions from the journey of your mail or package by 90% by 2040. This aligns with net zero according to the SBTi standard.
Concrete steps
PostNL is taking concrete steps toward sustainability. For example, residents of the 25 city centers that will implement emission-free zones starting 1 January 2025 can expect their packages to be delivered emission-free by PostNL. Additionally, 96% of Dutch households will receive all mail that fits through the mailbox emission-free for the final leg of the journey from the sorting center. This will be done on foot, by (cargo) bike, e-scooter, or electric car. In 2023, we developed the first parcel lockers with a rooftop city garden, drawing attention to endangered local plants and animals. This way, we make a small contribution to preserving local biodiversity. Beyond the Dutch borders, PostNL has added approximately 4 million liters of HVO100 to the European road transport diesel network since this year, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 12 kilotons annually.
Sustainable vehicle fleet
Within the IPC, PostNL and other postal organizations worldwide have been working for many years to make the delivery of mail and packages more sustainable. Since the beginning of this collaboration in 2008, these postal organizations have reduced their annual CO2 emissions by nearly 40%. Transportation remains one of the main sources of CO2 emissions within the postal sector, making it a priority for postal organizations to make their vehicle fleets more sustainable. PostNL aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030 and by 90% by 2040.
