PostNL makes Top 5 most sustainable companies in transport and logistics sector (DJSI)
The Hague, the Netherlands, 17 November 2021 – PostNL ranks among the world’s first five most sustainable companies in the transport and logistics sector. Last Friday, S&P Global announced that PostNL ranked fifth in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), which ranks companies’ performances on a range of sustainability indicators across three dimensions: Governance & Economic, Environmental, and Social. This year’s ratings are based on company performances in 2020.
Herna Verhagen, PostNL’s CEO, commented: “We aim to be the key driver of sustainable logistics in the Benelux area and this rating reflects PostNL’s solid performance in implementing improvements in the environmental, social and economic arena. We’ve set ourselves ambitious goals and are determined to keep doing better all the time. Inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index helps us identify the areas in which we have further to go.”
Transparency
For its performance in environmental reporting and social reporting, PostNL achieved the maximum possible score of 100, making it one of the leading companies in its sector. PostNL is deeply committed to taking social responsibility and providing transparency on its performance to customers, suppliers, employees and other stakeholders.
Sustainable alternatives
PostNL has set itself the target of emission-free delivery of all parcels and letters in the Benelux countries by 2030. It has launched a large number of major projects to help achieve its aim and these are beginning to reap rewards. PostNL did particularly well in the Climate Strategy category, having started to accelerate its carbon emissions reductions in 2021, through further electrification of its fleet and by increasingly replacing fossil fuels powering its trucks with sustainable alternatives such as HVO100, which emits 90% less carbon.
Employee engagement and sustainable employability
In 2020, a lot of people from other industries joined PostNL and employee engagement was high, resulting in the sector’s highest score in the Talent Attraction & Retention category. It likewise recorded an excellent score on Human Capital Development, as it has invested a lot in people through a wide variety of education and training courses, with a focus on the accelerated digitalisation of the company. Some 150 people, for instance, are being trained to transfer to IT within the space of three years. And this focus on IT has been paying off, with great strides made in the Information & Cybersecurity category – the score that rose the most within S&P Global’s Governance & Economic dimension.
