Driving a sustainable future

Reducing and offsetting

We aim to be the key driver of sustainable logistics in the Benelux area and to be ahead of the game in terms of ambitions and activities, as the world is facing enormous climate and environmental challenges. That’s why we’ve put into place ambitious carbon emission reduction targets.

Step by step towards less carbon

Step by step, we’re working towards net zero carbon emissions, with our sustainable targets and steps validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). By signing the SBTi’s “Business Ambition for 1.5°C”, we have committed to net zero carbon emissions worldwide by 2050, thus playing our part in limiting global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius in keeping with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) , a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), helps companies looking to reduce their carbon emissions to translate their ambitions to targets based on science.

Gold Standard

Gold Standard was created by a group of NGOs including World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Imposing high quality requirements for projects used to offset carbon emissions, the standard is administered by the Gold Standard Foundation, a non-profit organisation

Clear carbon reduction strategy

We have a long-term carbon reduction strategy in place, broken down into concrete steps for the short term and underpinned by four key pillars:

Efficient network

Smarter planning should help us travel fewer kilometres and consume less fuel.

Clean kilometres

We’re aiming to deliver all parcels and letters emission free in the last mile in the Benelux region by 2030 (including both our own transport and that of our delivery partners). As an interim step, we will make our deliveries emission free in 25 city centres by 2025, using bikes and electric vehicles among other modes of transport. For our trucks and vans, we’re switching to fossil free fuel where we can, such as biogas, HVO100 (renewable diesel) and BioLNG.

Sustainable buildings and facilities

Our parcel sorting centres are among the most sustainable, BREAAM-certified commercial properties in the Netherlands. We use solar panels to generate sustainable energy ourselves as much as possible, meeting any additional energy requirements through sustainable energy purchases.

Sustainable products and services

We assist our customers with our own products and services, helping to make the dispatch and delivery chain as sustainable as we possibly can.

Reduce

The world is facing enormous climate and environmental challenges. We’re doing everything we can to reduce our carbon emissions.

Offset

From 2022 we’re investing in Gold Standard Climate+ projects to offset the remaining emissions of all our own activities and those that we farm out to our partners.

No more carbon emissions by 2050

Our ambition is for our activities not to emit any carbon by 2050, but we’ll continue to offset if we don’t quite succeed – by investing in projects that capture and store CO2 from the atmosphere, for instance in plants and trees.

About Gold Standard Climate+ projects

We choose to offset any remaining carbon emissions by investing in Gold Standard projects that aim to reduce or prevent emissions, or capture carbon from the atmosphere. In fact, we prefer to invest in Gold Standard Climate+ projects, which in addition to carbon emissions reduction put great emphasis on the sustainable development of the local population. These projects add value for local communities by improving living conditions, for instance by providing more work, clean water or education. Project examples include planting new forests, investing in wind farms and generating solar energy.
