How does registered mail work?

    Check the terms and conditions for registered mail

    Check if your letter is eligible for registered mail: 

    • Minimum size: 14 x 9 cm 
    • Maximum size: 38 x 26.5 x 3.2 cm  
    • Maximum weight: 2 kg 
    • Is the value of the goods you are sending lower than €50? Then send your letter by registered mail

    Is the value higher (up to €500)? Then choose insured shipping.

    Save money by preparing your mail online, before dropping it off at a PostNL point.

    Drop off your registered mail at a PostNL point

    You will receive a shipping receipt. Make sure you save this!

    Track your registered mail en route with track & trace. Once we have delivered your letter to the recipient, you will also find a copy of the signature for delivery in your track & trace overview.

When do we deliver your registered mail?

Did you drop off your registered mail before 5 p.m.? Then we usually deliver your letter the next day. Are you dropping off the letter on Saturday? Then we will deliver it on Tuesday.

If the recipient is not at home, the letter can be collected from a nearby PostNL point. Note: we do not deliver registered mail to a neighbour. We only hand over the letter after the recipient or an adult member of the household has signed for delivery. 

Wat if we cannot deliver the letter to the addressee? Don't worry. We will automatically return your letter to you free of charge. That is why it is so important to write a return address on the envelope.
